What Every Hacker Should Know Before natIgnite 2025
natIgnite 2025 is here, and it’s not your typical hackathon.
This year’s theme is AgeTech, and we’re inviting you to build bold, long-lasting solutions for the aging population. Unlike our flagship hackathon, natHacks, which emphasizes rapid prototyping, natIgnite is about depth. You’ll work closely with a problem provider from day one – a clinician, researcher, or industry expert – to co-develop a solution grounded in lived experience or active research.
Whether you’re looking to expand your portfolio, explore hardware and health tech, or build something that lasts beyond natIgnite, this is your chance to go all in. Here’s how to make the most of it:
1. Build With Purpose, Not Just Speed
Let’s be honest. Anyone can build something that works. But can you build something that matters? At natIgnite, your goal isn’t just to code, it’s to create a solution that solves a real problem for a real person.
Understand the Context: Research AgeTech trends. Think fall detection, memory support, or caregiver tech.
Use Pitch Day Wisely (Aug 3): Listen closely during problem provider pitches, ask thoughtful questions, and be intentional during matchmaking to align with a problem you care about.
Act Like a Consultant: Treat your problem provider like both a client and a collaborator. Learn to scope your project with them, not just for them.
Document Your Work: Keep your repo clean, your code modular, and your README and documentation clear. This helps your team stay aligned, makes it easier to iterate, and shows others (including judges or future collaborators) the thought behind your build.
Build with Continuity in Mind: Avoid hardcoded solutions. Prioritize usability, scalability, and accessibility – especially in health tech.
2. Work Smarter With the Right Tools
You don’t need to be a hardware expert to succeed at natIgnite, but knowing how to ask for help and apply the right tool goes a long way.
Whether you’re working with Arduino, Muse, OpenBCI, or NeuroStimduino, focus on how the hardware fits your solution, not on perfecting every detail. Our on-site hardware team is available to support you with soldering, 3D printing, Bluetooth setup, and more – so don’t hesitate to drop by if you’re stuck or curious. Simple, reliable tools combined with clear thinking will take you further than overcomplicated builds.
3. Get the Most out Of Mentorship
The right conversation can move your project forward, and fast.
natIgnite’s mentors offer deep experience in areas like biosignals, UI design, accessibility, and business strategy. Don’t wait until you’re stuck, reach out early, show them what you’re working on, and ask specific questions. A quick conversation can save hours of confusion or bring in a new perspective. These are people who want to see you succeed – use that to your advantage and build relationships that last beyond natIgnite.
Mentorship in Action
"All the volunteers and mentors were extremely supportive and the overall environment was great."
— Hacker, natHacks 2024
4. Connect, connect, connect!
Your network is just as important as your project.
Start by building trust and clarity within your team, share your strengths, goals, and what you want to learn. Then, take the time to meet others throughout the event. Talk to mentors, judges, fellow hackers, and problem providers during breaks, meals, and activities. The connections you make here could lead to future teammates, mentors, or even job opportunities. Be open, curious, and ready to engage.
5. Take Care of Yourself
Last but not least: take care of yourself. Hackathons can be intense, and it’s easy to burn out if you’re not mindful of your needs. Fortunately, natIgnite is built to support you, not just your project.
You’ll have access to meals, snacks, wellness spaces, and time to recharge throughout the weekend. Step away when you need a break, check in with your teammates, and place your energy. A clear head and steady rhythm will help you think better, build smarter, and enjoy the experience more fully.
Ready to Ignite Change?
With these tips, you’re set to make the most of your natIgnite experience. This is your chance to build AgeTech solutions that go beyond natIgnite.
If you haven’t already, apply now to join as a hacker, applications close July 25, 2025.
